My experience at Street Fashion Week during LA Fashion Week

I recently attended a New York based fashion production during LA Fashion Week. A friend of mine was raving about this cool new show that services emerging designers. She shared photos from her New York Fashion Week experience with me and I was immediately convinced that I had to witness the creative visual experience for myself.

On March 17th, I attended Street Fashion Week during LA Fashion Week.

Street Fashion Week is a fashion show for the people. While it maintains exclusivity as evident in the great networking opportunity presented, you don’t get that elitist feeling that normal fashion shows leave you with.

For the installment of the show I attended, they chose to take on the challenge of being the world first ever fashion show on a soccer field. A challenge it definitely was but all the same it is refreshing to see the creativity behind this brand. I mean who does that? Fashion Show on a soccer field? Street Fashion Week does.

The FW2018 runway event will be headlined by Project Runway’s David Giampiccolo, as he returns to the SFW runway since his exit from the hit Bravo show. Also included in the lineup is emerging designer and LA based Deviante Lavie, Raw Hollywood, and Philly based Majeeda among others.

┬áIt’s clear this is a promising production. I can see some challenges in their business model. By claiming to be the most affordable platform offering emerging designers the opportunity to present without breaking the bank, they obviously are faced with the challenge of needing to get real creative to cover production costs. If they can strengthen their infrastructure to align with partners and sponsors who seek out opportunities to support creatives as is mentioned in their mission statement then I feel like they would stand a chance to own this space over the next few years as Streetwear is thriving.

Tips on How to Become a Model

The dream of most young girls is to become the next beautiful face of a popular magazine cover. Most are born to be models while others weren’t but can achieve their dreams by considering a few solutions. However, to make it to be a model does not necessary mean that you have to be the like of Naomi Campbell, weigh a hundred pounds and stand five feet eight. If this is your line of thinking, think again. The fashion world is changing and people of all sizes, colors, shapes and cultures are prospering in the career. In spite of the fashion career being a fascinating one, work has to be done to attain the desired heights. To start off, you will need to go through as many fashion books as you can. The market, internet and libraries are filled with these helpful books. Watching fashion videos will also help. These materials offer reliable resources and related topics on fashion, etiquette and grooming. This will help get the right walk, talk and smile as you carry on with your daily activities. It is essential in educating the aspirants on how to become a fashion model as it will keep you ready for an upcoming modeling opportunity.

The taking of modeling classes is a must. The only reason as to why this would not be required is either because you were born a model or you do not want to achieve in this career. Learning has to be done and nobody can educate themselves on everything. The community or civic groups and colleges give non-credit classes to enable personal enrichment. Enrolling to a modeling class will help you mingle with other people; learn how to relate, what makes the best model and many other lessons. This is the only place you can get to understand what does and does not work in the modeling world. With its ability to raise ones chances in modeling, it becomes an inevitable stage when one wants to be a model.

Finally, personal beauty has to be cultivated. Most of the models are recruited by the modeling scouts who painstakingly roam the country searching for new and fresh faces. This can be from anywhere; in the clubs, in church, in a shopping mall and many more sites. This means that if you wish to become a model, you need to be prepared at all times. Pitfalls of the Fashion Industry

There are thousands of young people who want to make it in the fashion industry every year, but unfortunately many will be disappointed. Here we will identify some of the major pitfalls of the fashion industry and give tips on how to avoid them.

Being over confident

A lot of people may find themselves the most beautiful or talented in their class, and may grow up with a lot of praise, and be surrounded by people who tell them that they’re more beautiful than most of the supermodels out there. So it can be a nasty surprise when they enter the world of modelling and find that they are surrounded by beautiful people and are nothing special after all.

The solution to being overconfident

You need to be confident, of course, but you need to be realistic too, and ready to be humble. Don’t expect people to be falling over themselves to sign you – always be polite and grateful for any opportunities that are given – and expect to work hard to earn success.

Thinking it’s all glitz and glamour

Because of what we see on TV and in the movies and magazines, a lot of people get the impression that the fashion industry is all about glitz and glamour. That there’s Champagne and caviar every step of the way, and life is one long party. Unfortunately this is not the case. Of course there are perks to being in the fashion industry, but like any other industry there is serious work to be done.

The solution to having the wrong impression

If you’re attracted to the industry because you think it’s going to be fun every minute and an easy way to achieve fame and fortune, then you need to adjust your mind set. If that’s all you’re interested in, then it might not be the industry for you. However, if you’re genuinely committed to launching a career in fashion, then you just need to stay realistic and be prepared for the hard graft.

Not planning for the future

Especially in modelling, careers are very short. There are a handful of supermodels whose faces allow them to keep working into their thirties and even forties, but for the majority of catwalk and fashion models, they need to have something else lined up.

Planning for the future

Having had a successful career modelling, you’ll be in a great position to sidestep into one of the other careers, such as fashion design or event organisation. Keep your eyes open for alternative opportunities and the kinds of things that appeal to you.

How about that there is no exact norm in the modeling industry. While a fashion model agency will have certain expectation from potential models, that “model look” may not always be the same.

Have you ever ventured off to a go-see or open call at a fashion model agency? If the answer is no, then let me give you a quick scoop. Most fashion modeling agencies offer a particular time each week or month where they allow aspiring models to come in and be examined. You can bring in a portfolio or merely a few snapshots. Just so you know, most high-end fashion agencies don’t want to see glamour shots or any made-up photos for that matter. They want to see what you truly look like, make-up free and hair up. After all, your complexion, hair, teeth and figure are all major aspects of modeling. If you don’t have any professional pictures, don’t worry about it. Simple take a few snap shots and bring them with your to the fashion model agency you’re interested in.

The web has quite a bit to offer in regards to fashion model agencies now days! What I mean is, you can look up their official websites any time you choose. Often a fashion model agency will allow you to contact them via email and attach a few photos for them to look at. This way they’re able to distinguish on some level whether or not they’d be interested in seeing you in-person. In some cases, fashion modeling agencies will even fly you out and do a test shoot. This is the best way to determine if they can make money off of your look. If you are interested in modeling, don’t put the dream on hold. Most women are teenagers when they tack this field and men are in their twenties.

All About Fashion Modelling

Fashion modeling is one of the most popular and one of the richest industries in the world at present. Each country has their own fashion trends and designs, and fashion modeling is the art of wearing those designs and displaying them to the girl. Fashion models are professionally trained artists who know how to catwalk and carry themselves gracefully across the ramp. These models are generally selected on the basis of a criterion. This criterion is set by the modeling agency. Models are regarded as the face of the fashion demonstrating agency. All the clothes that are designed by the designers in a fashion agency are adorned by the models and shown to the world in fashion shows.

The reason why the fashion industry is booming all the time is due to the changes in the fashion trends. Fashion tends to rapidly evolve during the passage of time. People tend to wear different kinds of clothes in winters and in summers, so usually new dresses are introduced in the market whenever a change of season is taking place. However, different fashion agencies tend to introduce different designs, so with the help of fashion modeling techniques, they introduce these designs in the market and showcase them for the general market.

In some fashion shows, general public can attend as well, but usually, only invitees are welcome. Before applying for fashion modeling, you should fulfill a certain list of requirements. These generally range from a slim and a sleek body, as well as a good figure and a pretty outlook. Generally, the majority of the fashion market is focused on women’s fashion, as that is the niche in which the larger amount of innovation is allowed. Men’s fashion is also increasing in trends and designs, but mainly these are generally restrictive. Secondly, it is a general concept that women are more in to fashion than men, which is why designers usually concentrate their focus on female fashion.

Each country has their own different trends of fashion designs, which is why fashion designs vary from place to place. However, there are some very popular designers that have made a huge name for themselves in the fashion agency. Names such as Versace, Gucci, Louis Vuitton are extremely popular all over the world, and they sell off some of the most expensive dresses. They house both female and male clothing, and have outlets throughout the world in various countries.

Becoming a Fashion Model

It must look easy to be a fashion model. All they have to do is stand there and look pretty and smile, and everyone adores them for it, and they get adorned with all the hottest fashions. Not to mention they get paid millions of dollars in endorsement deals and they get to travel all over the world for both work and leisure. The glamorous aspects of the job are undoubtedly thrilling, however being a fashion model is not as easy or care-free of a lifestyle as it seems.

First of all, before any model becomes well-known, they must be signed by a modeling agency. Modeling agencies are larger companies that represent fashion models to work in the industry. They often handle the business side of fashion design, like contracts, billing and booking jobs. An agency can bring a model to fame with their vast connections in the industry. One of the hardest parts is getting signed by the agency in the first place. In order to even hope to qualify, women models must be between 5’6″ and 6’0″ with a body weight “proportionate to their height”. In other words, perspective models must be extremely thin. Since hundreds and thousands of girls audition for modeling jobs, a successful model must have something-some special quality that makes her stand out from the hoards of wannabe models.

Once a signed, working model, you must constantly search for ways to get yourself out there. One of the biggest events in both the modeling and fashion design world is fashion week. A fashion week is a week-long series of runway shows that feature several different designers’ new collections. New York City’s Mercedes Benz fashion week is one of the most famous fashion weeks, along with Paris and Milan, the fashion capitals of the world. Exposure on a runway during fashion week can lead to high-class, lucrative contracts for models. Each fashion week often shows collections of over one hundred designers, and each designer showcases a spring and a fall collection, but compared to how many models vie for spots on these runways, the competition is still fierce!

The next step towards supermodel stardom is landing a spot as the face of a prestigious fashion campaign. Fashion campaigns for particular designers can earn models quite a substantial amount of money, as well as enough exposure to have them steadily working for a long time. One of the most popular examples of this is the fragrance campaign, and fashion design houses such as Gucci, Valentino and Chanel run extremely high-class advertisements for their fragrance products, that only the most elite of models participate in.

The life of a model is luxurious and glamorous, but it also involves a lot of competition and hard work. Do you think you have what it takes to make it in this industry? Visit fashion schools to learn more about the world of fashion design.

The Unintended Consequences of Globalism

Globalism might be good for the world economy as a whole, but does not necessarily mean it has been good for the American worker. Whether intentional or unintended, the American worker has suffered through the philosophy of free trade. Do not miss quote me, Globalism has a lot of positives. Now more than ever the people of earth are connected through the internet and can communicate information faster than any other time in history. People are exposed to different cultures and ideas, and the free flow of information is exponentially evolving our society. “Free trade” plays a big part in globalism, which is why there has been a “backlash” from non-college educated workers in wealthy countries in direct response to the effects of free trade policies. When wealthy counties openly trade with developing countries it can overvalue the wealthy countries currency, which in turn makes imports cheaper while exports become more expensive. However, according to the Economic Policy Institute, the real culprit is not the valuation of the dollar and the increasing trade deficit. (Bivens, Economic Policy Institute)

The USA has increasingly shifted its economy from manufacturing to services like banking and investing. It is cheaper to import products of manufacturing from a country that has extremely cheap labor than it is to employ American workers in the United States. This in turn means there now is a premium on college educated Americans who are filling job openings within the service industry. On the other side of the coin, manufacturing jobs are leaving the country and lowering wages of workers without a college degree. This fact coupled with increasing technology that replaces workers and a trade policy that out prices “expensive” American workers is leading to decreased wages. As the US trades more with developing countries as a percentage of GDP, the wages of unskilled workers continue to decrease. (Slaughter and Swagle, International Monetary Fund)

Though Globalism has a net increase in GDP and employment for countries involved, most of the gains from free trade is disproportionately received by the top 1% of Americans. Policies that protect corporations and their interest at the expense of the American worker exacerbate the problem. Trade policies like NAFTA and others have little protections for workers and heavily favor the multinational corporations that seek to benefit from free trade. This only adds fuel to income inequality, which for poor countries can increase economic growth while having a negative effect on rich countries. Rich countries are also at higher risk of financial crisis when they have high levels of income inequality. (Malinen, Huffington Post)

Globalism and free trade are linked very close together, which is why there is a stigma attributed to the word. There has been growing resentment within the US and other wealthy nations of globalism as a whole. They do not just condemn free trade, but openly blame minorities and marginalized groups for their decrease in wages and “eroding” their cultural dominance that they claim dominion over. This is a deadly cycle, as income inequality only feeds this type of behavior. In a country that is not adequately educating its people, more of the workers within its country will become more ignorant. With free trade putting a premium on college educated workers and decreasing wages of unskilled labor, we are now almost at a tipping point, socially and economically.

Globalism has many unintended consequences that inadvertently caused huge social and economic problems within the US. The problems that globalism is causing is not a hard fix. Reducing the income inequality will eradicate more of the negative effects of globalism. Universal Education, Universal healthcare, and a rewrite of our tax code are just a few ways to reduce income inequality. All of these possibilities are well within our means. We have to take care of these problems swiftly, before globalism becomes an integral part of our own decline. (Mason, Post-Gazette)

Global Trends in the Cosmetic Industry

Cosmetic dyes and colours: Explained

Cosmetic colours are also known as cosmetic lakes. These colours are produced by taking the help of absorption of dyes that are water-soluble onto a substrate. It makes the colour insoluble in water. Cosmetic lake colours are made by making use of unique technology. The technology helps in attaining extremely fine particles. These particles help in achieving shade consistency. In comparison water soluble colours, cosmetic lakes are much more stable & safe. They also generate vivacious and brighter colours. It has been seen that cosmetic pigments and lakes are more suitable for food products that contain fats and oils. They are also suitable for those products that do not contain enough moisture for dissolving colours.

Cosmetic dyes, on the other hand are used for making cosmetic colours & products. These dyes are widely used by the cosmetic manufacturing industries and businesses all over the world. They are primarily used for manufacturing hair dyes, lipsticks, nail polishes, shampoo as well as other personal care products. It has been seen that generally water soluble & food dyes are very easy and safe to use. These dyes are mostly used for a wide variety of applications. They include cleaning chemicals, soaps, medicine, cosmetic products etc.

Know which ones are safe for use

Be it the use of any type of cosmetic dyes or cosmetic colorants safety of use is a primary consideration. Cosmetic colours and cosmetic dyes often make use of a wide range of synthetic colours. These are often referred to as FD&C colours. They are mainly extracted through coal tar and are basically a by-product of petroleum. Research shows that some particular coal tar based dyes lead to different types of cancer. This is why the FDA regulates them. They also determine the arsenic or lead amount they contain. Thus there are many restrictions in the use of such colours.

Some global trends in Cosmetic dyes and cosmetic colours

Worldwide it is seen that North America, followed by Europe, has the largest market for colour cosmetics. This is due to innovations in colour cosmetics. Other factors also include high consumer disposable income and frequent new product launches in colour cosmetic market in the region. However Asia too is expected to show high growth rate in the colour cosmetics market in next few years. This is on account of the increasing consumer incomes and rising in awareness about personal care products in the region.

Economic Turmoil and the Future of Brazil

For many years, Brazil has been an emerging economic hub, attracting investors from all over the world. The Brazilian economy saw an 368% increase in Gross Domestic Product growth from 2003 to 2011. In addition, Brazil took in almost half of Foreign Direct Investment flowing into South America during 2015. This doesn’t come as a surprise since it reigns as one of the major emerging national economies. However, Brazil has seen a recent economic downturn with increasing unemployment and a contracting GDP. In fact, the Brazilian government cut 2017 GDP expectations from 1.6% to 1% growth. Having been one the most lucrative foreign investments for governments to individual investors, what happened to the so-called “Country of the Future” and can Brazil regain its momentum?

Back in 2015, recession hit Brazil hard and the country is still struggling to get back on track. According to the CIA World Factbook, the economy contracted 32% from its peak in 2011 and unemployment reached a new high at 12.6% in 2016. Being based mostly on services, agriculture and oil, Brazil’s economy has a direct correlation with global demand. With global recession looming, Brazil is feeling the effects of a slow world economy.

Brazil is a top tourist destination offering beautiful beaches, a diverse culture and exciting festivals. However, with the world economy slowing down, people are less likely to travel abroad. Since the majority of the country’s GDP derives from the service industry, Brazil will not be able to rebound any time soon unless there is a major boost in consumer confidence.

The demand for Brazilian exports was slashed when its largest trading partner, China, entered into an economic slowdown of their own. The decrease in exports caused massive layoffs throughout the nation. The notorious economic downward spiral began by wary consumer spending as unemployment rose. Companies that tried to gain capital by borrowing in U.S. dollars found it difficult to pay back those loans as the Brazilian Real crashed 25% in the span of a year in 2015.

One of the major hits came from low oil prices and the corruption of Petrobras, a large oil company and Brazil’s largest source of investment. Brazil is major producer of oil, exporting $11.8 billion worth in 2015, according to the Observatory for Economic Complexity. OPEC delivered a major blow when the cartel decided not to cut oil production, causing oil futures prices to plunge. In order to cope with heavy losses, Petrobras was forced to sell off assets and halt future research and expansion plans.

As if things weren’t going poorly, Petrobras was also caught in a scandal with former Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff and other high office executives. From 2004 to 2012, the company had spent over $2 billion on bribes to politicians whom would allow the company to charge inflated prices for construction contracts. Now that the scandal has unfolded, Petrobras executives face jail time and the company as a whole is forced to pay billions in fines.

So what does the future hold for Brazil?

Although at the moment the future looks dim, there are still signs of hope Brazil can turn itself around. The Real has seemed to stabilize in 2016 and heads into 2017 with an upward trend. Moreover, experts’ GDP projections for 2018 through 2020 show promising figures that Brazil can restore pre-recession level growth.

Even more promising, U.S. companies are still showing faith in Brazil’s future. American Airlines plans to invest $100 million in an aircraft maintenance center in Sao Paulo. Brazilian Investment Partnership Minister Wellington Moreira Franco and many countries like the United States, United Kingdom, France and Japan agree there are still reasons to invest in Brazil. This should be seen as a sign of confidence that the Brazilian market will grow soundly with the support of both national and international investment.
